This position provides mental health services to the offender population, including formal and informal behavioral health evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interventions.

Knowledge Of

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience working with clients involved in the criminal justice system;
  • Experience working with clients with complex needs, dual diagnoses, and a wide range of mental health functioning;
  • Theories and techniques used in counseling, crisis intervention, and substance use disorders;
  • Evidence-based practices related to the rehabilitation of criminal offenders;
  • Treatment planning, charting, and report writing;
  • Suicide prevention and intervention specific to the correctional population.
Skills To
  • Effectively communicate and motivate treatment-resistant clients;
  • Conduct clinical interviews, assessments, and evaluations;
  • Diagnose mental health disorders.
Ability To
  • Conduct individual and group counseling or therapy sessions;
  • Gather, interpret, report, and use information concerning clients;
  • Establish and maintain effective interpersonal counseling relationships;
  • Perform mental health evaluations, formulate treatment plans, and make client care recommendations;
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team;
  • Respond quickly and effectively to mental health crises;
  • Make clinical decisions regarding offender’s mental health;
  • Work in a correctional facility, adhering to safety and security protocols.
What You Will Do

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing professional mental health services, including evaluations, assessments, and interventions;
  • Offering group and individual counseling, therapy, and crisis intervention, including participation in 24-hour Mental Health On-Call Rotation;
  • Ensuring emergency and non-emergency transfers for offenders with acute mental health needs;
  • Providing clinical guidance to non-clinical staff;
  • Ensuring continuity of care through referrals and documentation;
  • Documenting electronically in a timely manner;
  • Monitoring treatment, listening to offender concerns, and providing counseling;
  • Promoting safety and security through observations and contraband control;
  • Attending training, including self-defense and CPR, to ensure safety and preparedness.
Qualifications

Applicant must possess a master's degree from an accredited institution in counseling, social work, psychology, or marriage and family therapy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation with a master's or doctoral degree in a mental health field from an accredited program;
  • Licensure eligibility as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, or Psychologist;
  • Experience providing mental health treatment in a correctional environment.
Required Competencies
  • Ability to provide professional mental health treatment;

  • Participation in 24-hour Mental Health On-Call Rotation;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Comprehensive clinical documentation skills;
  • Ability to work with diverse offender populations.
Conditions Of Employment

The SD DOC is committed to a drug- and alcohol-free environment. All offers are contingent upon background checks, drug screening, and ability to perform essential functions.

Additional Requirements

Attach your resume and three professional references. Successful candidates will undergo background and abuse/neglect screening, and a drug test.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act and eligible for Veterans’ Preference. The selected candidate must pass a self-defense and CPR exam, and complete TB screening.

Carrying OC spray is optional; training and certification are required if carried. Physical ability to perform self-defense tasks is necessary.
