Job summary

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt, IA is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant for the Mental Health and Wellness Clinic. The CMA will coordinate mental health care, manage prior authorizations, and support both front-office and clinical tasks in a busy outpatient setting.

The position offers Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm (40 hours/week) with full-time benefits including IPERS, health, vision, dental, life insurance, long-term disability, and PTO accrual from day one.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
Experience with insurance prior authorizations and benefits verification preferred.
Experience in a mental health setting or family practice preferred but not required.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Familiarity with health system EMR.
Exceptional customer service and professional phone etiquette.
Experience managing multiple workflows in a fast-paced environment.
Strong organizational skills to ensure efficient patient flow.

Responsibilities

Greets, registers, and assists patients in person or by phone, including insurance verification and scheduling support.
Triages incoming calls, including crisis situations per established protocols.
Prepares and rooms patients; collects medical histories, vital signs, and visit information.
Primarily coordinates specialty mental health medications and treatments, including prior authorizations and communication with providers, pharmacies, and insurers.
Supports providers during exams and treatments, including specimen collection, medication administration, and prescription coordination.
Educates patients on medications, treatments, and care instructions as directed by the provider.
Maintains accurate and timely documentation of patient records and billing information; processes payments and assists with account corrections.
Completes assigned patient, billing and referral work queues.
Ensures clinic readiness by managing supplies, equipment, and patient charts.
Prepares and maintains treatment areas in accordance with safety and infection control standards.
Maintains compliance with safety, confidentiality, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
Communicates effectively with patients, providers, and healthcare team members to support coordinated care.
Participates in training, performance improvement activities, and ongoing professional development; may assist in training new staff.
Demonstrates flexibility by rotating clinical and administrative duties as needed.
