Job summary

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center is seeking a Mental Health Assistant to support patient care in a dynamic hospital setting. The role involves vital sign checks, specimen collection, daily living assistance, and collaborative care with nursing staff.

Responsibilities include de-escalation, patient orientation, unit safety, and adherence to infection control while maintaining clean, well-stocked patient areas.

Qualifications

• Heartsaver/CPR Certification required.
• Technical skills required for patient care.
• Must pass Nursing Attendant test administered by BMC.
• Strong administrative skills.
• Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for OPS.
• Good organizational skills.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Must be computer literate.
• Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position.

Responsibilities

• Provides patient care with attention to patient growth and development appropriate to age.
• Takes and records vital signs (TPR) and reports deviations.
• Collects specimens as assigned (urine, stool, sputum).
• Weighs patient and records weight.
• Assists with activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, ambulation, and meals.
• Records oral intake and urinary output.
• Performs assigned treatments (e.g., dressings).
• Communicates with nursing staff regarding patient needs.
• Orients patient to environment and builds rapport with patient and family.
• Assists in patient management including de-escalation and safe containment under RN direction.
• Performs unit searches and inspections for safety and contraband.
• Keeps units clean and stocked for new admissions.
• Applies infection control and safety procedures.
• Reports significant unit problems to charge nurse.
• Monitors visiting sessions and transports patients as needed.
• Supports unit therapeutic activities.
• Maintains safe unit environment through rounds and observation.
