Job summary

Physician Affiliate Group of New York (PAGNY) supports The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) of NYC Health + Hospitals in providing mental health care within the jail system, including on-site clinics and ongoing supervision. This role is based on Rikers Island and requires collaboration with DOC staff.

The MHTA will participate in crisis interventions, supervision, and group activities to ensure patient safety and quality care.

Qualifications

• An associate’s degree in criminal justice, Social Services or health related area.
• A High School diploma or a GED and two years of full-time experience in Nursing Behavioral Health or another related field.
• Or any combination of 1 and 2 above.

Responsibilities

• In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, perform crisis and/or de-escalation interventions.
• Conduct therapeutic observations, group sessions, patient supervision and related duties.
• Orient patients to unit policies, procedures, rules and schedule.
• Utilize crisis/de-escalation techniques when needed to support behavior.
• Identify triggers and communicate environmental variables to the treatment team.
• Perform 1:1 monitoring of patients for behavioral management purposes.
• Participate in departmental clinical training as required.
• Lead or co-lead groups/activities such as anger management and document outcomes.
• Respond to patient emergencies and coordinate with DOC staff for safety.
• Engage DOC staff before incidents of violence or contraband on the unit.
