Job summary

Powell is seeking an experienced field electrical technician to install, commission and service Powell switchgear and PCR systems across the United States and offshore platforms. You will travel up to 85% annually, supporting West Coast, Gulf Coast South, offshore facilities, and the East Coast.

Responsibilities include performing insulation (megger) and low-resistance tests, Hi-Pot checks, torque verification, and full mechanical/functional testing, plus documenting every step for reliable

  • 2+ years as shop or field electrical or breaker technician.
  • Familiarity with ANSI/IEEE device function numbers and conductor ampacities.
  • Ability to write complete test reports and project summaries.
  • Knowledge of 120/208/240/480V systems and electrical codes.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair AC/DC switchgear and PCR systems including PowlVac breakers.
  • Complete performance tests and document results for US and Canada customers.

Job description

A day in this rolePicture your week: you’re rolling up to a customer site on the West Coast one day, boarding an offshore platform the next, and finishing the week on the East Coast. You install and commission Powell switchgear and power control rooms (PCRs), verify performance with precision tests, and document every step so customers across the US and Canada trust their systems to run safely and reliably.What you’ll take onYou will ensure end-to-end safety, quality, and performance of Powell equipment by:Installing, maintaining, and repairing AC/DC switchgear and PCR systems— including PowlVac breakers.Executing performance tests such as insulation (megger) and low-resistance (ductor) checks, Hi Potential testing, torque verification, and full mechanical/functional testing.Completing site documentation on time: weekly time sheets, signed service/repair orders, materials used, and clear service reports.Coordinating with Powell Project Management, customers, vendors, and labor resources with a professional, customer-first mindset.Communicating schedule updates regularly to the Field Operations Scheduler and District Service Manager.Supporting the Services Manufacturing group with construction, installation, wiring, testing, and occasional in-house fabrication.Inspecting assigned vehicles, calibrated tools, and test equipment routinely to maintain readiness.Flexing between roles—from assisting shop fabrication to overseeing small installation crews—based on project needs.Travel and scheduleAvailable to travel up to 85% annually.Work hours are flexible and will include overtime with periodic weekend support.Primary service regions: West Coast, Gulf Coast South, offshore facilities, and the East Coast.Training, tools, and supportPowell provides comprehensive safety and technical training with full office support. Once qualified, you’ll receive a company vehicle, standard tooling, test equipment, a laptop, phone compensation, and a company expense card.Minimum qualifications2+ years as a shop and/or field electrical or breaker technician.Working knowledge of ANSI/IEEE C37 standards for breakers and switchgear.Familiarity with ANSI/IEEE device function numbers and conductor ampacities in switchgear applications.Awareness of electrical air and surface creepage clearances.Ability to write complete test reports and project summaries, and to explain basic anomalies encountered on projects.Preferred qualificationsAbility to read contactor and circuit breaker schematics.Understanding of Hi Potential and low-resistance testing.Hands-on experience with mechanical/electrical functional testing of breakers and switchgear.NICET Level I certification.HUET / Offshore Survival Training (provided if not current).NFPA 70E training (can be provided).OSHA 10/30 training (can be provided).Core skillsUnderstanding bus and structural modifications in switchgear projects.Solid grasp of basic electrical theory and control circuits (Ohm’s Law, AC/DC fundamentals).Ability to assist senior technicians with maintenance, repairs, installations, upgrades, and retrofills on Powell switchgear and power control rooms.Proficiency with 120/208/240/480V systems, electrical installation, switchgear, welding, OSHA 30 practices, and NFPA 70E.Experience with electrical systems and diagnostics on heavy equipment is a plus.Working environment and safety cultureYou’ll work primarily in industrial settings, serving customers locally and across the continental US. Powell’s Service Division emphasizes safe conditions for all team members and provides the equipment and rules designed to prevent incidents.
