Job summary

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is seeking a Laboratory Technologist to provide timely and quality clinical information by performing laboratory tests and procedures. Works with care teams to meet patient and provider needs, promoting safe, reliable results and Lean process improvements across the lab.

The role involves collaboration with leadership, education of new staff, and ongoing competency maintenance to support high-quality patient care in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's of Science in MLS or related field from an accredited program.
  • ASCP or equivalent Medical Technologist certification.
  • No minimum experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Process orders and specimens, perform accurate testing procedures and report results.
  • Follow hospital and departmental policies and safety/compliance requirements.
  • Exercise independent judgment in non-routine circumstances to solve problems.
  • Operate instruments with established protocols and perform maintenance.
  • Correlate results with patient age/condition and investigate deviations.
  • Perform quality control data analysis and document actions.
  • Attend shift meetings and Town Hall meetings.
  • Educate and train new personnel and students.
  • Maintain current professional skills per competency policy.
  • Promote lean culture through ongoing process improvements.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job Description

Provides timely and quality clinical information and improved patient outcomes by accurately performing laboratory tests and procedures. Works effectively with others to meet the needs of the patients and care providers. Actively promotes a Lean work culture by performing team member duties to ensure consistent use of Lean principles and processes, including continually seeking work process improvements. Assists leadership team with administrative and technical support to proactively support the efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and to promote a safe environment at Children's.

Experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory
Education
  • Bachelor's of Science degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical laboratory science (MLS) from an accredited institution, or U.S. military provided training as a MLS ; or Bachelor's degree that meets the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489
Certification Summary
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalentMedical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Job Responsibilities
  • Processes orders and specimens, performs accurate testing procedures across all assigned testing, and reports test results according to standard operating procedures.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with and follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including those pertaining to safety and compliance.
  • Exercises independent judgment and critical thinking in non-routine circumstances to solve problems.
  • Operates instruments using established protocols and quality assurance checks and performs preventive and corrective maintenance on instruments.
  • Correlates results with patient age and/or condition, recognizes deviation from expected results, and analyzes and corrects problems using standard operating procedures.
  • Performs, records, and analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
  • Attends and participates in shift meetings, staff meetings and Laboratory Town Hall meetings.
  • Conducts education and training for new personnel and students.
  • Maintains current professional skills and technical competency as defined by laboratory competency policy.
  • Actively promotes a lean culture by performing duties to promote an understanding and consistent use of lean principals and processes.
  • Performs other duties as required by department.
