Job summary

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist/MLS to perform and oversee quality clinical testing across all assigned areas. The role requires adherence to SOPs, safety and compliance, and participation in lean process improvements.

The position emphasizes independent judgment, ongoing professional development, and teaching new staff, with weekend shifts and variable start/end times as described.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, MLS, or approved equivalent.
• US CLIA 42 CFR 493.1489-compliant education or equivalent military MLS training.

Responsibilities

• Processes orders and specimens, performs accurate testing procedures across all assigned testing, and reports test results according to standard operating procedures.
• Demonstrates familiarity with and follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including those pertaining to safety and compliance.
• Exercises independent judgment and critical thinking in non-routine circumstances to solve problems.
• Operates instruments using established protocols and quality assurance checks and performs preventive and corrective maintenance on instruments.
• Correlates results with patient age and/or condition, recognizes deviation from expected results, and analyzes and corrects problems using standard operating procedures.
• Performs, records, and analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
• Maintains current professional skills and technical competency as defined by laboratory competency policy.
• Conducts education and training for new personnel and students.
• Attends and participates in shift meetings, staff meetings and Laboratory Town Hall meetings.
• Actively promotes a lean culture by performing duties to promote an understanding and consistent use of lean principals and processes.
• Performs other duties as required by department.

Education

• Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical laboratory science (MLS) from an accredited institution; or U.S. military provided training as a MLS; or Bachelor's degree that meets the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489

Certification Summary
