Job summary

Penn Medicine in Lancaster, PA seeks a Medical Laboratory Technician to perform QC, specimen processing, and test operations within the clinical laboratory to support patient care.

The role involves instrument handling, result documentation, and adherence to laboratory standards. Evening shift 2:30pm-11:30pm with up to every 4th weekend rotation and occasional holidays.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or GED required.
• Associate degree in medical laboratory technology.
• Completion of a medical lab science program.
• MT/MLT certification or ASCP eligibility.
• One year of clinical internship or laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs and documents Quality Control and verifies instrument functioning.
• Handles incoming specimens: separation, centrifugation, preservation.
• Organizes specimens, labels, and test materials for runs.
• Monitors test systems and runs standards, controls, and patient samples.
• Records results and alerts caregivers to critical values when needed.

SCHEDULE

PT - Evening shift from 2:30pm-11:30pm, up to every 4thweekend rotation, 2-3 holidays per year

SIGN-ON BONUS

Up to $5K (based on hours worked per week) with a 2-year commitment. Eligible external candidates only.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Performs and documents Quality Control. Verifies functioning of instruments.
• Performs initial evaluation and handling of incoming specimens: separation, centrifugation and preservation procedures; sorts and organizes specimen batches.
• Organizes, labels and numbers specimen, worksheets, and appropriate test materials in test set-up. Measures and dispenses specimens and reagents in test system.
• Monitors manual functions of test system and instruments to assure accuracy and precision; performs and runs standards, patient samples, programmed controls through automated or manual protocols.
• Records and evaluates programmed quality control results according to established control limits; follows corrective action procedures for out-of-control situations.
• Perform patient and control testing on unit-specific Point of Care testing, according to Lab regulatory standards. Report results and findings to the Licensed Care worker.
• May perform periodic QC review.
• Enters test results and related data into laboratory computer and into logbook after controls are evaluated and found to be within limits; calls "alert values" to appropriate caregivers. Accurately reports test results, understanding the inter-relationships between patient condition, medication and timing of specimen collection.
• May perform competency assessments.
• May provide orientation training to testing personnel.
• Performs routine scheduled maintenance, cleaning and decontamination of instruments, equipment, and work areas not cleaned by Environmental Services personnel.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• HS Diploma GED
• Associate’s degree in medical laboratory technician
• Completion of a medical lab science program or medical lab technician.
• MT, MLT or issued by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists equivalent or eligible to take such exam. May have Laboratory area specific certification.
• One 1 year of clinical internship or Laboratory experience.
