Job summary

Penn State University is seeking a Medical Technologist to join the Animal Diagnostic Lab's bacteriology section. The role involves performing a broad range of tests, including culturing, enumeration, identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility on diverse specimens, as well as processing environmental samples for national QA programs.

The successful candidate will assist with purchasing, reagent prep, record keeping, and quality assurance, with cross-training opportunities across the lab.

Qualifications

• Associate degree (or equivalent) required.
• 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline is preferred.
• Medical Technologist Certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform broad testing in bacteriology and molecular microbiology on various specimens, including culturing, enumeration, identification, and susceptibility testing.
• Process eggs and environmental samples for QA programs and regulatory bodies; review results and report to clients.
• Other duties include purchasing lab supplies, routine maintenance, reagent prep, record keeping, and quality assurance tasks.

POSITION SPECIFICS

The Animal Diagnostic Lab is searching for a skilled Medical Technologist to serve in the bacteriology section of a veterinary diagnostic lab whose purpose is to protect animal health, human health, and ensure food safety.

Key responsibilities include:

• Perform a broad range of testing in bacteriology and molecular microbiology on a variety of specimens and samples to include culturing, bacterial enumeration and identification and antimicrobial susceptibility.

• Perform egg and environmental sample processing and culturing for the Pennsylvania Egg Quality Assurance Program, the Food & Drug Administration, and National Poultry Improvement Plan. Review results, send reports, and respond to client needs.

• Other duties include purchasing laboratory supplies, routine laboratory and equipment maintenance, preparation of reagents and materials, record keeping, and quality assurance tasks.

The Technician is expected to cross train in other areas of the laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous clinical laboratory experience, computer data entry proficiency, and farm, agribusiness, and/or veterinary medical background are highly desirable.

• Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline and/or a Medical Technologist Certification.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $59,580.00 - $86,400.00.
