Job summary

SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment is seeking enthusiastic Medical Laboratory Scientists/Technicians to support the Veterinary Services Laboratory Team. The role involves performing hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and related analyses on animal samples to aid veterinarians and researchers in caring for the park's animal collection.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory analyses to support veterinarians and curators in animal health management.
  • Maintain records and enter data into computer systems.
  • Prepare samples and assist in animal care projects as needed.
  • Follow federal, state and local laboratory regulations and QC procedures.
  • Interact professionally with park guests and co-workers.

Job description

We’re looking for dedicated and collaborative individuals to join our exceptional and innovative Veterinary Services Laboratory Team!

What you get to do:
  • Perform laboratory analyses to enable veterinarians and curators to properly manage the health of the animal collection in the park and the animals rescued, rehabilitated, and returned back into the wild.
  • Enthusiastically represents SeaWorld by displaying a positive attitude, maintaining a high level of energy and commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job.
  • Follows laboratory procedures according to federal, state and local regulations.
  • Follows engineering and work practice controls for laboratory workers.
  • Performs analyses in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, mycology, parasitology, urinalysis, cytology and water chemistry.
  • Computes and prepares test results.
  • Maintains records and enters data into computer.
  • Prepares and processes samples and maintains records for animal care and research projects.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Dispenses vitamins and other supplies as needed.
  • Assists and participates in animal care projects as needed.
  • Ensures excellent animal care service by responding to team's requirements, expectations and needs.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
What it takes to succeed:
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Must be Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or Medical Technician ASCP certified Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist experience.
  • Registered with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
  • Working knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, including QC and Troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of Microbiology diagnostics and the Vitek2 preferred.
  • Prepare laboratory reports and enter results in digital medical records.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft applications, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Able to sit, walk, talk, use hands, hear, smell and have color vision.
  • Able to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Able to handle multiple tasks at once and work in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Able to work indoors with several large and small laboratory instruments as well as refrigeration and freezer units which create moderate noise.
  • Able to work with limited exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation.
  • Protective equipment is provided when necessary.
  • Able to positively interact with park guests and co-workers of all ages, different ethnic/cultural backgrounds and/or language, and individuals with special needs.

What else is important: Have 5 days of unrestricted availability to include weekends and holidays. 40 hours per week. Overtime hours may be necessary upon business need.

Desired Qualifications:
  • At least Bachelor’s or an Associate’s degree in a science discipline and experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Technician.
  • Registered with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
  • A valid state driver’s license and be able to obtain a company driver’s license.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills preferred.
  • Experience operating basic laboratory analysis equipment preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills preferred.
