Job Summary/Basic Function

Wheaton College’s nursing program is seeking a clinical Instructorin Medical-Surgical nursing. We seek candidates who share ourcommitment and passion for educating the nurse of the future tocare for others in meaningful, practical ways that align seamlesslywith Wheaton College’s mission and its strategic vision for diverseand inclusive excellence. The clinical instructor will preparestudents for the clinical experience by providing orientation topolicies and procedures and introducing them to facultyrequirements for clinical site experiences. The overarchingresponsibility of each affiliate position is to provide clinicaleducation for the assigned student group(s) in the healthcareagency.

Essential Functions

Duties and responsibilities include,but are not limited to

• Review and understand the classroom and clinical courseobjectives and apply the teaching techniques to achieve the courseand program objectives best.
• Model effective oral and written communication that engages thestudents, provides clarity, and improves student learning.
• Discuss with students their concerns and/or problems directly orindirectly related to the learning experience.
• Is responsible for assisting students in developing anunderstanding of values, attitudes, and ideals appropriate to thehealthcare profession.
• Established and maintained relationships with clinicalsites.
• Participate in faculty meetings, both formally and informally,with faculty members from both the didactic and clinicaldepartments.
• Provide instruction in clinical and clinical simulationlabs.
• Supervising care provided by a group of students (typically sixstudents per group) as they complete their clinical rotation inyour area of specialty.
• Coordinate with clinicians at the clinical site to assignstudents to patients.
• Orient students to the clinical area and demonstrate properprocedures.
• Lead discussions and elicit information from students,demonstrating that students are learning and accomplishing theclinical objectives.
• Teach students how to perform their duties at the clinical siteand answer any questions they may have.
• Maintain clinical standards and course expectations throughouteach course or term.
• Develop patient care assignments that allow students to meet theobjectives of the course, which include but are not limitedto:
  • Professional role development
  • Assess clients and develop, implement, and evaluate plans ofcare
  • Accurately document plans of care
  • Administer medications
  • Master skills such as vital signs, fingerstick, urinarycatheterizations, aseptic technique, wound care, etc.
  • Interpret the nursing implications of routine laboratory anddiagnostic tests
  • Practice therapeutic communications
  • Practice collaboration with the healthcare team
  • Demonstrate cultural competence
• Conduct a pre-conference to help students understand patient careassignments, establish priorities, and develop a plan to meetpatients’ needs for the day.
• Conduct a post-conference each clinical day to provide studentswith a forum to present patients, share experiences, and reflect ontheir practice.
• Evaluate and grade student performance using the weeklyrubric.
• Communicate with the Course Coordinator as necessary to resolveissues or concerns in clinical areas.
• Work effectively as part of the overall faculty team,demonstrating positive interpersonal relations, collaborating withother faculty members to meet student needs, participating infaculty meetings and nursing program committees, and responding torequests from management.
• Participate in ongoing program evaluation activities asneeded.
• Maintain faculty expectations as required by the College and theBoard of Nursing.
• Demonstrate proper respect for students, faculty, and staff andhave a student-friendly manner in the conduct of class.
• Demonstrate attitudes and qualities consistent with the ethics ofthe health professions, including:
• Prepare a summary evaluation of student performance attermination of the course, review with the student, and submitsigned forms to the course coordinator.
• Contribute to evaluating course activities at the end of thecourse.
• Other as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• A current MA RN license in good standing;
• A minimum of an earned Master’s degree in Nursing or bematriculated in a Master’s in Nursing program
• Evidence of clinical competence in the area of clinicalinstruction;
• Evidence of ongoing and progressive professional development inacademic and professional communities appropriate to teachingresponsibilities.

When determining and establishing hiring rates or recruitmentranges for a position, the College considers a number of factorsincluding the budget for the position, the range of the grade, theexternal market for the position or similar positions, level andscope of responsibilities, required education, skills and relevantexperience as well as internal equity. All salary offers must havethe prior approval of the Office of Human Resources.

The anticipated hiring or recruitment range for this position is$10,000 per semester.

The salary for this position will be commensurate with thequalifications, education and experience of the candidate.
