Job description

On Campus.

EXPLO Middle School at Wellesley College.

Wellesley, MA.

Dates (in person): June 22, 2027 - July 23, 2027 (weekdays only).

We are seeking medical professionals, innovative researchers, and dynamic teachers to lead the Medical Rotations Focus Program at EXPLO Middle School at Wellesley College.

About EXPLO Middle School:

EXPLO Middle School is the leading enrichment program for middle schoolers, inspiring students ages 12 to 14 (currently in grades 6-8) since 1977. Our four-week summer program runs as two 2-week sessions at Wellesley College, just outside Boston, with day and residential options.

In EXPLO 360°, students design their own program from dozens of hands‑on workshops and electives. In our Focus programs, Veterinary Science and Medical Rotations, they dig deep into one field. Instructors spark curiosity and bring classes to life. Advisors build belonging, running the activities, events, and trips that turn a campus into a community. They are supported by experienced academic, student life, and operations leaders who provide coaching, feedback, and guidance throughout the summer.

The Opportunity:

As the Medical Rotations Instructor, you will engage with a dynamic, project‑based curriculum crafted by EXPLO’s professional curriculum development team, yet retain the flexibility to infuse your teaching with your unique expertise, interests, and passion for the field. In this role, you will guide bright and curious students through an experience that emphasizes collaboration, critical thinking, and real‑world problem solving, supported on the ground by EXPLO’s Office of Teaching and Learning.

You will have the opportunity to facilitate connections with guest speakers and organizations working on the frontiers of medicine, and inspire students to explore both new areas of study and potential future career paths.

The Medical Rotations curriculum features visiting faculty, guest speakers, off‑campus trips, and projects with organizations at the cutting edge of the field. More information and a course description can be found on our website: https://explo.org/medical-rotations

Instructor Responsibilities:
  • Implement an existing project‑based Medical Rotations curriculum in collaboration with our Instructional Coaches, with opportunities to offer input based on your areas of interest, research, and/or professional practice.
  • Teach each weekday, with an on‑campus commitment from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some off‑campus trip days may extend slightly beyond these hours, while remaining within normal business hours.
  • Complete the relevant and necessary daily preparation required for delivering an engaging student experience.
  • Work closely with your Instructional Coach, welcoming regular classroom observations and putting feedback into practice.
  • Facilitate connections with external partners and guest speakers, as appropriate.
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings, and provide student feedback throughout the summer.
Dates, Compensation + Benefits:
  • This is a 5‑week seasonal position. A 4-day, on‑campus, in‑person training and orientation will start on Tuesday, June 22, 2027.
  • Before the summer, Instructors also work remotely with one of our Instructional Coaches to review lesson plans and course content; dates are flexible, and will be discussed as part of any job offer.
  • Compensation for this role is $5,400, based on relevant training and experience.
  • Lunch is provided for all Instructors.
  • Campus housing for Instructors is very limited; if campus housing is needed, Instructors will be expected to fulfill additional program responsibilities, to be discussed during the hiring process.
About You:
  • You have earned, at minimum, a degree in a medical or related field, with recent professional or academic experience in a medical field. Preference will be given to candidates with professional experience obtained post‑graduation.
  • You enjoy working with middle school students and bring enthusiasm for project‑based, experiential learning.
  • You are available to work on campus for the duration of the program. Please note: campus housing may be available, on a very limited basis, for applicants not local to the Boston/Wellesley area.
  • You are open to feedback and eager to grow as an educator.
  • You are authorized to work in the United States, and/or have the ability to obtain authorization by the start of the program.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
  • This position will require staff members to occasionally assist with a variety of physical tasks, including carrying signage and supplies, event set‑up and tear‑down, and standing or walking for prolonged periods of time during events; responsibilities before students arrive will include setting up both indoor and outdoor spaces.
  • The Wellesley College campus is large and spread out, and we will be using spaces throughout the campus. Because of this, days will include significant amounts of walking.

EXPLO will make reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act that would enable employees to perform the essential functions of their job. Please contact us to discuss an accommodation request.
