Job description

This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) Service at the Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Center. MRTs (Coder) are skilled in classifying medical data from patient health records in hospital settings, physician offices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, and specialty centers. These coding practitioners analyze and abstract patients' health records and assign alpha-numeric codes for diagnoses and procedures.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. MRTs (Coder) must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Experience. One year of creditable experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and the structure and format of a health record. OR,
  • Education. An associate's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with a major in health information technology/health information management, or a related degree with at least 12 semester hours in relevant courses; OR,
  • Completion of an AHIMA approved coding program that included courses in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, ICD, and CPT coding, leading to eligibility for certification.
  • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying, e.g., six months of experience plus six semester hours of relevant courses.
  • Certification. Must have a mastery level certification through AHIMA or AAPC, or Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification through AHIMA or ACDIS.

May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision if applicable.

Grade Determinations:
GS-9 Level: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the MRT (Coder) journey level, with mastery level certification such as CCS, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, COC, or CIC.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated advanced knowledge of ICD, CPT, HCPCS coding systems; ability to research and resolve complex coding questions; review coded data for adherence to standards; present audit results; and interpersonal skills for conflict resolution.
