Job summary

The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System seeks a Medical Records Technician (Coder) within the Health Information Management (HIM) section. Coders classify data from patient health records in hospital or physician settings, following ICD-CM, CPT guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Applicants may be referred while education/certification requirements are pending; citizenship and formal certification pathways are outlined for GS-04 to GS-08 levels within VA systems.

Qualifications

• One year of creditable experience in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, coding, and health records.
• Associate’s degree with HIM major or a related degree with at least 12 semester hours in HIM courses.
• Completion of an AHIMA-approved coding program leading to eligibility for coding certification.
• Education/experience combinations allowed: six months of experience plus six months of HIM-related coursework or equivalent.
