Qualifications

  • One year of creditable experience with medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and the health record structure.
  • Associate degree with HIT/HIM or related field with 12 semester hours in HIT/HIM, or completion of an AHIMA/AAPC coding program; eligibility for coding certification.
  • Experience/education combinations acceptable as described, including military training with health record courses.

Responsibilities

  • Classify and abstract data from patient health records.
  • Assign ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses and procedures.
  • Review coded data for adherence to coding standards and prepare audit results.
