The role requires strong coding knowledge, HIM expertise, and experience auditing ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT and HCPCS codes in both inpatient and outpatient records. Responsibilities include reviewing coded data, providing guidance, and delivering training to staff to improve coding accuracy and compliance.

Qualifications

  • One year of creditable experience indicating knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathology, coding, and health records
  • Associate degree with major in health information technology/health information management or related degree with 12 semester hours in health information management
  • Completion of an AHIMA approved coding program leading to coding certification eligibility
  • Experience/education combinations acceptable per VA qualifications standard

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology to ensure proper code selection
  • Review ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT and HCPCS codes in health records
  • Audit coding data, identify trends and prepare summary feedback for improvement
  • Provide coding guidance and training to coding and clinical staff
  • Collaborate with staff to support process improvements in coding practices
