Job summary

The Michigan Department of Corrections seeks a Medical Records Technician to maintain prisoner health records, document diagnoses, and coordinate health record information within secure facilities.

Responsibilities include database maintenance, processing FOI requests, and training new staff on the Electronic Medical Record system. A health information associate degree and AHIMA credential (RHIT or RHIA) are required.

Responsibility for maintaining prisoner health records in accordance with federal/state statutes and departmental policies and procedures. Assisting with documenting the diagnosis code on prisoner records. Maintenance of health care databases. Performs continuous quality improvement activities/reports. Coordinates the distribution of health record information. Processes release of information requests. Prepares hard copy health records for transfer and receives hard copy of health record. Trains new health care employees with the Electronic Medical Record. Coordinates and tracks specialty health care appointments. This employee works within the secure perimeter of these correctional facilities.

Education

Possession of an associate's degree in health information or medical record technology.

Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator.

Experience

• Medical Record Examiner 8: No specific type or amount is required.
• Medical Record Examiner 9: One year of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 8.
• Medical Record Examiner E10: Two years of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner, including one year equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 9.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
