Job summary

Michigan Department of Corrections seeks a Health Information/Medical Records professional to maintain prisoner health records, document diagnosis codes, and manage health databases.Responsibilities include QA reports, information releases, and training staff on the Electronic Medical Record system.

Candidate must have an associate degree in health information or medical record technology and AHIMA RHIT/RHIA certification.

Qualifications

  • Possession of an associate's degree in health information or medical record technology.
  • Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator.
  • Experience levels indicate progression from Medical Record Examiner 8 to E10 with increasing responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain prisoner health records in accordance with federal/state statutes and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist with documenting the diagnosis code on prisoner records.
  • Maintain health care databases.
  • Perform continuous quality improvement activities/reports.
  • Coordinate the distribution of health record information.
  • Process release of information requests.
  • Prepare hard copy health records for transfer and receive hard copy of health record.
  • Train new health care employees with the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Coordinate and track specialty health care appointments.
  • Work within the secure perimeter of correctional facilities.

Responsibility for maintaining prisoner health records in accordance with federal/state statutes and departmental policies and procedures. Assisting with documenting the diagnosis code on prisoner records. Maintenance of health care databases. Performs continuous quality improvement activities/reports. Coordinates the distribution of health record information. Processes release of information requests. Prepares hard copy health records for transfer and receives hard copy of health record. Trains new health care employees with the Electronic Medical Record. Coordinates and tracks specialty health care appointments. This employee works within the secure perimeter of these correctional facilities.

Education

Possession of an associate's degree in health information or medical record technology.

Experience
  • Medical Record Examiner 8: No specific type or amount is required.
  • Medical Record Examiner 9: One year of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 8.
  • Medical Record Examiner E10: Two years of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner, including one year equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner 9.

Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator.

The Department of Corrections will not hire individuals who have been convicted of a felony or who have felony charges pending, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
