Major Responsibilities:
Non-Clinical Responsibilities
- Informs provider regarding delays and the status of waiting patients.
- Assists with medical record maintenance by preparing documents for scanning.
- Assists patients with the self check-in process as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Answers telephones, responds to questions, takes messages or transfers calls as appropriate.
- Schedules appointments and referrals as needed. Performs patient check-in, registration, and insurance verification. Handles cash/credit collections and reconciliation.
Clinical support in the delivery of clinical care
- Provides written patient education and discharge instructions. Reinforces discharge instructions from the provider.
- Assists patients in obtaining additional services ordered by the provider prior to leaving the practice and sets up referrals.
- Maintains site quality control logs in accordance with standards for CLIA certification. Communicates delays in results to the provider. Responsible for accurate specimen collection and patient identification.
- Knows emergency equipment locations and reports non-functioning equipment.
- Measures and records vital signs and reason for visit during patient encounters.
- Screens patient calls, directs urgent concerns, and documents follow-up.
- Practices standard precautions in all patient encounters.
- Orders supplies, maintains inventory, and promotes environmental sustainability.
- Prepares exam rooms and stocks supplies per standards.
- Performs tests/procedures as directed, in accordance with training and policies.
Medical Record and HIPAA Standards/Risk and Safety Compliance
- Maintains a clean, safe, and compliant work environment.
- Follows infection control and safety guidelines.
- Participates in safety training and reports incidents.
- Maintains confidentiality and disposes of patient information securely.
Practice Participation and Patient Satisfaction and Service
- Provides high-quality, empathetic service to patients.
- Adheres to organizational standards and participates in process improvements.
- Maintains professional appearance and behavior.
- Responds to patient, staff, and provider needs effectively.
Professional Developmental Responsibilities
- Stays current with standards of care.
- Attends meetings and maintains skills, including CPR certification.
- Completes annual competency reviews.
Education/Experience Required:
- 2 years of related experience or equivalent education/experience.
- Experience with vital signs preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and CPT/ICD9 coding preferred.
- High school diploma or GED.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Good communication skills.
- Computer familiarity.
- Good time management and organizational skills.
- Current CPR certification.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Ability to work varying shifts, handle stressful situations, and work quickly.
- Exposure to adverse conditions and potentially infectious materials.
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds; use patient handling equipment for heavier lifts.
