Job summary

The Old Red Medical Museum at UTMB Galveston Campus is seeking a motivated Federal Work-Study student to support history-focused museum operations and research across unique collections.

Reporting to the Curator, the Student Assistant will inventory and label collections, assist with historical research on medicine history, and represent UTMB during museum events, collaborating with staff and UTMB Students For Old Red.

Qualifications

• Must have a Federal Work Study Award and be enrolled in a UTMB degree program.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Strong initiative, attention to detail, and time management.

Responsibilities

• Collections inventory: Undertake an inventory of the historical collections and update the records in the museum’s database.
• Collections organization: Assist in numbering and labeling to improve the organization of the collections and supplement database information with historical sources.
• Historical research: Conduct research on the history of medicine at UTMB (e.g., Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Collections).
• University representation: Serve as an ambassador for UTMB, the museum and Old Red during events.
• Team collaboration: Work effectively with museum staff, the UTMB community and visitors.
