Job summary

The Old Red Medical Museum at UTMB is seeking a motivated Federal Work-Study student with an interest in UTMB’s history and museum work. You will assist with collections handling, conservation-related tasks, and research while supporting museum operations and activities.

You will report to the Curator and collaborate with the conservator and other UTMB staff. This is a part-time, on-site student position with opportunities to gain hands-on experience in historical collections.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Collections inventory: Undertake an inventory of the historical collections and update the records in the museum’s database.
  • Collections organization: Assist in numbering and labeling to improve the organization of the collections.
  • Historical research: Undertake research on the history of medicine at UTMB.
  • University representation: Serve as an ambassador for UTMB, the museum and Old Red.
  • Team collaboration: Work effectively with museum staff, the UTMB community and visitors alike

Job Summary:

The Old Red Medical Museum is looking for a motivated and reliable Federal Work-Study student who is interested in UTMB’s history, museums, and behind-the-scenes work with unique collections. This position is a great opportunity to gain hands‑on experience working with historical biological collections while supporting museum operations, conservation objectives, research initiatives, and museum activities.

This position reports directly to the Curator of the Old Red Medical Museum. The museum’s Student Assistant will work closely with museum’s conservator, administrative coordinator and UTMB’s Students For Old Red.

Job Duties:
  • Collections inventory: Undertake an inventory of the historical collections and update the records in the museum’s database. (guidance provided)
  • Collections organization: Assist in numbering and labeling to improve the organization of the collections. Supplement database information by adding historical contextual sources.
  • Historical research: Undertake research (e.g. Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Collections, Moody Medical Library) on the history of medicine at UTMB.
  • University representation: Serve as an ambassador for UTMB, the museum and Old Red. Demonstrating professionalism during all museum events.
  • Team collaboration: Work effectively with museum staff, the UTMB community and visitors alike
Preferred Qualifications:
  • An interest in history/the history of medicine/Galveston’s history
  • Experience working independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines
Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience

Hours:

Up to 19 hours per week during the academic term. Occasional evening or event attendance may be required.
