Medical Laboratory Technician / Medical Laboratory Scientist

Overview
  • PRN
  • Location: Rockford, IL
  • Javon Bea Hospital

Provides patient care by collecting and processing samples and performing clinical laboratory procedures. Work at other Mercy facilities performing the same functions, as required. Work alternate shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed to adequately provide services. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Utilize the Information System to receive patients, order and collect samples, result tests, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities, and produce reports required to perform job tasks.
  • Confirm accuracy of patient sample identification prior to performing analyses; evaluate specimen quality and identify unacceptable specimens. Document information concerning specimen quality and impact on test results. Initiate recollection procedures as needed.
  • Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity lab tests as defined by CLIA in specialties such as hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank, or microbiology, using automated and manual methods according to policies and procedures.
  • Analyze test results for validity and accuracy before release; recognize problems with testing methodologies. Troubleshoot suspect results and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform high complexity tests like bone marrow and sperm morphology.
  • Ensure that turnaround times for results are met and critical results are reported and documented appropriately.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing procedures as per policy.
  • Interpret and troubleshoot quality control results to ensure accuracy.
  • Maintain instrumentation through preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration.
  • Participate in method and instrument evaluation and implementation.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues.
  • Participate in interdepartmental committees or teams.
  • Train students and new partners; complete and sign off on competency checklists.
  • Develop and update procedures as needed.
  • Serve as a resource for less experienced staff.
  • Perform additional tasks such as scheduling and antibiogram preparation.
  • Maintain competency in current procedures and learn new methods.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or

Associates degree in Medical Technology with MLT certification, qualified for high complexity testing per CLIA standards.

Certification and Licensure
  • MT/MLS Generalist or Specialty Certification required within 12 months of hire, or

MLT Certification with 5 years of experience.

Frequent standing, handling, talking, hearing, smelling; occasional walking, sitting, reaching; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; visual acuity required.

Some independent judgment required; no supervisory responsibilities.
