Medical Laboratory Technician

Full Time Technical Laboratory, Oyate Health Center, Rapid City, SD, US

Position Title: Medical Laboratory Technician

Division: OHC

Reports To: Lab Manager

Direct Reports: N/A

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for performing Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Urinalysis, and Microbiology, and microscopic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases for Oyate Health Center (OHC) patients. Rotating shifts, with occasional weekends and holidays.

The following functions are fundamental to the position and are required of all incumbents, with or without reasonable accommodation. These functions define the role and are not an exhaustive list of all duties.

  • Performs tests in the fields of microbiology, chemistry, hematology, serology, and urinalysis.
  • Conducts analyses of body fluids and/or tissue to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
  • Prepares reagents and primary reference materials.
  • Performs non-routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.
  • Recognizes and reacts to indicators of instrument and reagent malfunctions; locates and implements corrections.
  • Obtains analytical data, converts to proper units for reporting, and correlates data to verify results.
  • Prepares patient laboratory reports and provides to appropriate individuals.
  • Analyzes test results and enters findings in computer.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
  • Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.
  • Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment; identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs.
  • Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products. Maintains proper records for quality controls reports.
  • Performs phlebotomy duties to obtain blood samples.
  • Maintain effective, collaborative interdepartmental and external relations.
  • Must comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and accrediting agency regulations affecting areas of responsibility (CAP, CLIA, HIPAA).
  • Performs related duties.
  • Performs the core responsibilities of the position accurately, timely, and in accordance with established standards.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance consistent with the position’s schedule and operational needs.
  • Communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders as required by the role.
  • Adheres to all applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Utilizes required systems, tools, and technology necessary to perform the job.

Education/Experience:

Associate degree from a Medical Laboratory Technician Program.

Valid certification by a recognized certifying agency (ASCP, AMT) within six months of hire.

License not required by South Dakota.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment.

Must successfully pass a criminal and background check and a pre-employment drug screen.
