Job summary

Goodland Regional Medical Center is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to perform newborn to geriatric specimen analysis under supervision. The role includes maintaining a clean, stocked lab and accurate data entry into the EMR system.

Responsibilities include high-complexity testing across hematology, chemistry, blood bank and serology, with clear communication of abnormal results to physicians. This is a PRN, non-exempt position, reporting to the Laboratory Manager.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent; Associate degree in Applied Science.
  • 1–3 years of experience preferred.
  • MLT, ASCP, CPT or AMT certification required.

  • Input and retrieve lab results using the hospital's computer system.
  • Maintain inventory and cleanliness; ensure patient safety.

Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician

Reports To: Laboratory Manager

Summary
Performs neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient specimen analysis for diagnostic purposes, under the direct supervision of a medical technologist. Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing various equipment and work areas in the laboratory. Maintains laboratory inventory. Processes specimens in hematology, chemistry, blood bank and serology/immunology.
Essential Functions
  • Ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology.
  • Responsible for performing high-complexity testing.
  • Performs routine and stat laboratory assays.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab results for the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient. Abnormal results and/or panic values are then called to the primary care physician.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Always follows standard precautions.
  • Operates and maintains equipment correctly and safely, including calibration of instruments.
  • Cleans laboratory glassware, sinks and work benches, using appropriate solvents, brushes and cloths.
  • Uses hospital approved disinfectants for cleaning.
  • Check inventory of reagents and supplies in the laboratory, reports needed supplies to the laboratory manager.
  • Demonstrates the values of team concept on a consistent basis.
  • Communicates verbally in a clear and concise manner.
  • Submits suggestions to improve the laboratory’s efficiency.
  • Interacts with the laboratory personnel in a professional manner.
  • Performs clerical work; can input and retrieve lab results in the computer system.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with Physicians, staff, other departments, and patients.
  • Responsible for adhering to the department’s budget.
Competencies
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory principles, standards, applications, and tests.
  • Knowledge of medical laboratory safety, cleanliness and infection control policies and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient ability to use a computer and electronic medical record.
  • Maintain patient, employee, and employer confidentiality. Comply with all HIPAA regulations.
Position Qualifications
Minimum Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Associates Degree in Applied Science
Minimum Experience: Prefer 1 – 3 years of experience.
Certifications/Licensures
MLT, ASCP, CPT or AMT certification required.
Working Environment
Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. May be exposed to/occasionally exposed to patient elements. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness)
