Job summary

Henry Ford Health is seeking a part-time Medical Laboratory Scientist for our Blood Bank in Detroit. The role features an Afternoon shift of 20 hours per week with a sign-on bonus potential.

You will perform ABO/Rh typing and antibody screening, handle product receipt/issuance, and process about 6,000 samples monthly with precise documentation. You’ll use TEG and Werfen Neo Iris and work with care teams to ensure patient safety.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; ASCP/AMT certifications or equivalent preferred.
• Certification at technologist/MLS level from a recognized agency is desirable.
• Six months in a medical laboratory setting if certs not held.

Responsibilities

• Perform ABO/Rh typing and antibody screening/identification.
• Process and track blood products receipt, shipment, and issuance.
• Handle ~6,000 samples monthly with accurate documentation.
• Collaborate with providers and care teams to meet patient needs.
• Operate advanced lab equipment (TEG, Werfen Neo Iris).
• Contribute to LEAN improvements and process optimization.
• Own validation and documentation of maintenance tasks.

• Master the art of ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening and identification—the detective work that keeps blood transfusions safe and effective

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Coursework must align with duties of the specific section Medical Laboratory discipline position and meet the education Eligibility Routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist listed on the ASCP website at (ascp.org)
  • OR possesses a categorical scientist level certification as a BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB
  • OR has met the requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications. Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.
• Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions are required.
• Certification at the technologist, or medical/clinical lab scientist level from a nationally recognized agency, such as ASCP, AMT, ASM, AABB, ACS, or HEW is preferred.
