Department: Laboratory, Section: Microbiology. Work Hours: Mostly evening shifts with occasional days, rotating weekends and holidays.
The MLT is responsible for accurately processing, analyzing, and reporting laboratory results in a timely manner with minimal supervision, while maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards. The MLT comprehends and follows procedural guidelines in performing laboratory tests, including quality control monitoring, computer applications, instrumentation troubleshooting, and specimen collection and processing.
The Medical Technologist exercises professional judgment in performing and interpreting laboratory tests, following established procedures, maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards. Capable of assuming lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor, performing and interpreting standard, complex, and specialized tests. The technologist understands quality assurance and can implement and monitor quality control programs.
Requirements
For MLT: Associate degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician Program, ACT 169 clearance, and certification by A.S.C.P. within 6 months of hire, or H.E.W. certification with 5 years of clinical laboratory experience, or already functioning as an MLT at SVH or TMC (Grandfathered) as of June 2002.
For MT: Must be MT (ASCP) certified or hold a BS degree from an accredited program with A.S.C.P. certification within 6 months of hire, or already functioning as an MT at HVS or HVB (Grandfathered) as of June 2002, or certified as a CLT through HEW with at least 20 years of experience.
Both MLT and MT must obtain Acts 73 and/or 169 clearances within 90 days of employment, if applicable.
