Summary:
The apprenticeship position allows the Medical Laboratory Technician to meet the requirements of the Medical Laboratory Technician program by successfully completing competencies outlined in the program. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Apprentice performs a wide variety of complex critical tests and analyses on patient samples in the areas of Blood Banking, Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, and Parasitology, which provide clinical information for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases under the supervision of the Lead Medical Technologist or Director, Laboratory Services.
Responsibilities:
- Performs tests on patient samples, completing complex critical analyses following written protocol.
- Performs and analyzes quality control procedures.
- Troubleshoots all procedures in the areas assigned.
- Operates all instruments in the areas assigned.
- Performs start-up reagent loading and maintenance as required on various instrumentation.
- Verifies and documents test results using Epic or appropriate laboratory system.
- Confirms abnormal results and calls “critical values” to appropriate teammates.
- Operates HIS and LIS technology proficiently.
- Maintains work area in a clean and sanitary condition.
- Assists in the training of new teammates and students.
- Informs supervisors of shortages of supplies or consumables.
- Assists in writing procedures for the section.
- Uses appropriate interaction with and provides recommended or required services to all patients, possessing a basic understanding of the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients, as well as cultural considerations.
- Maintains a safe environment for self and teammates, applying knowledge of universal precautions, PPE, and infection control.
- Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
- Participates actively in staff meetings and quality/performance improvement activities.
- Communicates effectively with teammates and supervisors, maintaining professionalism, high customer service standards, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Other Information:
- Education: Enrollment in the Medical Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Program.
- Licensure/Certification: Certification from ASCP preferred.
- Experience: One year in an acute hospital setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of various medical laboratory tests preferred.
- Good analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Effective reading, writing, and communication skills in English.
- Proficiency with MS Office, Epic, and ability to learn new software rapidly.
- Ability to stand and work on uncarpeted floors for significant portions of shift.
Valid NC Driver’s License: No. If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
