Qualifications

  • AA/AS degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related science.
  • Current state licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided.
  • WV-specific: HCTP or Trainee License if applicable in West Virginia.
  • Medical Laboratory Technician Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and analyze clinical laboratory tests across disciplines within licensure scope.
  • Set up, operate, maintain, and adjust laboratory instruments; perform QC and maintenance.
  • Review results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits; take corrective actions as needed.
  • Process and analyze samples promptly while following ID procedures.
  • Take phlebotomy procedures as needed and report findings to clinicians.
  • Maintain accurate patient and specimen records; ensure safety and infection-control compliance.
  • Collaborate with healthcare workers to interpret results and solve problems.

Job description

  • Perform and analyze clinical laboratory tests within the scope of licensure across laboratory disciplines
  • Understand method principles and perform quality control and preventative maintenance
  • Review and analyze results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits
  • Process and analyze samples promptly and orderly while following identification procedures
  • Set up, operate, maintain, and adjust laboratory instruments
  • Take appropriate quality-control action and follow infection-control procedures
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures as needed
  • Complete forms and report findings to nurses and physicians
  • Collaborate with healthcare workers to solve problems and interpret patient laboratory results
  • Perform routine and basic laboratory testing in a designated clinical laboratory area
  • Identify testing inconsistencies and take corrective action
  • Maintain accurate, neat, and legible patient and specimen records
  • Follow hospital, state, and federal safety guidelines
  • Maintain compliance with hospital and departmental safety, security, and infection-control policies
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, visitors, physicians, staff, and the public
Requirements
  • Associate of Science (AAS) degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Technology or Science OR an associate degree in a chemical or biological science
  • Current licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided
  • For West Virginia: High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License OR Trainee License issued by the WV Department of Health
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by ASCP or AMT preferred
  • Experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician preferred
  • Ability to multitask and handle stressful situations
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work well as part of a team with co-workers, supervisors, staff, patients, and customers
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to meet physical demands including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment
  • Ability to work around strong or unpleasant odors and potential exposure to agents that may cause serious disease
