Job Overview

The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technician (MLS/MLT) performs and monitors various medical laboratory analyses of patient specimens to provide accurate test results for clinical diagnoses and treatment. They ensure compliance with regulatory standards by following established procedures, maintaining a safe environment, and contributing to accreditation efforts. The MLS/MLT collaborates effectively within the department and with other teams to deliver quality service through communication, cooperation, and teamwork.

Essential Functions

• Interact professionally with co-workers, visitors, and staff, reflecting Jefferson's values.
• Properly process specimens, including patient identification, labeling, and collection via phlebotomy as needed.
• Assess specimen acceptability through visual inspection and quality control recognition; document and communicate issues and critical values per hospital policy.
• Record and verify test results using the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot analytical equipment; keep detailed maintenance records.
• Follow quality control policies to ensure accuracy of results; participate in proficiency testing and document findings.
• Maintain clinical competency through annual regulatory compliance and participate in educational in-services.
• Perform additional duties as assigned, including training other technicians and students.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's Degree in a related science field required, preferably from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology program, or completion of Military Medical Laboratory Training. Prior laboratory training or experience is accepted; ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.
