Job description

Job Summary

The team member is responsible for pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens, including order processing, specimen verification, centrifugation, aliquoting, etc. They validate and process specimens delivered to the laboratory, ensuring timely and appropriate preparation for testing. The team member may also perform phlebotomy. They must be able to make decisions, solve problems, and recognize when to involve leadership support. Ensuring policies and procedures are followed is also a key responsibility. Additionally, they will assist in training others on equipment and software as needed.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or related sciences, or equivalent. Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Technology or MT program is preferred. Graduates before 1987 with a two-year certification are recognized as MT.
  • Experience: One year in laboratory science for specialty areas (BB, Flow, Micro). Clinical internships of 12 months meet this requirement. Three years in core sciences areas are preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: Scientist certification from ASCP or AMT is required. For Flow Cytometry, MDT(AMT) or SCYM(ASCP) certifications are acceptable if no other scientist certification is held.
  • Additional Skills: New graduates must obtain certification within 12 months of hire; failure to do so may result in termination. Participation in certification maintenance programs is required for newly certified individuals. Knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory equipment, testing procedures, and quality control is essential. Skills in performing tests, troubleshooting, and establishing effective relationships are also required. Ability to read and understand instrumentation information, follow protocols, work independently, and communicate clearly is necessary. Preferred additional skills include specialist certifications from accreditation agencies.
