Job summary

Mass General Brigham is seeking a Per Diem Medical Laboratory Assistant to receive, label, and distribute clinical specimens on site. You will verify patient data, accession samples, and prepare them for testing within the laboratory information system.

Responsibilities include inventory control, adherence to safety standards, and collaboration with clinicians to ensure timely, accurate processing. Prior lab or healthcare exposure is preferred; associate degree in a related field is desirable.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in a related field preferred or a high school diploma or equivalent required.
• 1–2 years of experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting preferred.
• Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment, terminology, and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Receive, label, and distribute clinical laboratory specimens including blood, urine, and tissue samples.
• Process specimens by verifying patient information and accessioning into the laboratory information system.
• Prepare samples for testing and ensure accurate specimen handling.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment.
• Follow established procedures for specimen handling, storage, and disposal.
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the laboratory area.
• Adhere to safety and quality standards including PPE use and hazardous material disposal.
• Collaborate with laboratory staff and healthcare providers to ensure timely and accurate processing.

Essential Functions

• Receive, label, and distribute clinical laboratory specimens including blood, urine, and tissue samples.
• Process specimens by verifying patient information, accessioning samples into the laboratory information system, and preparing samples for testing.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and equipment.
• Follow established procedures and protocols for specimen handling, storage, and disposal.
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the laboratory area.
• Adhere to safety and quality standards including use of personal protective equipment, proper disposal of hazardous materials, and adherence to laboratory accreditation requirements.
• Collaborate with laboratory staff and healthcare providers to ensure timely and accurate specimen processing.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by laboratory management.

Qualifications

Education: Associate's Degree Related Field of Study preferred or High School Diploma or Equivalent required

Experience: Experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting 1-2 years preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment and terminology.

• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Basic computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
