Job description

Teach AALB's 60-hour Medical Interpreter Training Program, live and online.

About the role

AALB's Medical Interpreter Training Program is a 60-hour course that qualifies people who speak two or more languages to interpret professionally in healthcare settings across the United States. Thousands of students have graduated from it.

You teach the standards of practice, the code of ethics, medical terminology, and the decisions a medical interpreter makes during an appointment. Classes are live and online, and scheduled in advance.

This is contract work. Classes are scheduled for times you tell us you are available, and you set your own hourly rate. You tell us your rate in Round 1.

What you'll do
  • Teach live online classes to groups of adult learners.
  • Practice realistic encounters with learners.
  • Give each learner specific feedback on their interpreting.
  • Tell a learner when they are not ready yet.
  • Let us know which learners are struggling and which are ready for more.
  • Teach the course as written, and suggest improvements to the material.
What we're looking for
  • Professional experience interpreting in medical settings.
  • National certification as a medical interpreter (CCHI or NBCMI), or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the interpreter code of ethics, and sound judgment in applying it.
  • The ability to explain clearly how you interpret to someone who is learning.
  • Experience teaching, training or mentoring interpreters, in a classroom or one to one.
  • Availability for live online classes, which are scheduled in advance.
  • A quiet space, a camera, and a reliable internet connection.
Nice to have
  • Experience teaching medical interpreting specifically, or teaching in a university.
  • Experience with a language pair AALB does not already teach in.
About AALB

AALB is an Illinois-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization aiming to improve the health of patients with limited English proficiency. We do this by training professional medical interpreters, providing interpreter services to healthcare organizations, and lobbying for policy reform.
