Americans Against Language Barriers trains bilingual individuals to work as medical interpreters in real healthcare settings. In labs you will guide learners through clinic encounters, explaining what went well and what to improve, in the language you lead.

Sessions are contract work with flexible hours; you set your own rate and share it in Round 1. A quiet space and a reliable internet connection are essential for success.

About the role

AALB trains people who already speak two or more languages to work as medical interpreters. In class they learn the standards. In a Skills Lab they practice interpreting with an experienced interpreter.

A Skills Lab is a session of one hour to one hour and thirty minutes, booked in advance. You lead it: you take the learner through situations they will meet in a clinic, then tell them what went well and what to improve.

We need Skills Lab Leaders in many languages. Tell us every language you can lead a lab in.

This is contract work. Sessions are scheduled for times you tell us you are available, and you set your own hourly rate. You tell us your rate in Round 1.

AALB is an Illinois-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization aiming to improve the health of patients with limited English proficiency. We do this by training professional medical interpreters, providing interpreter services to healthcare organizations, and lobbying for policy reform. We envision a future where language services are seamlessly and freely available across the healthcare system.
