Job description

Medical Director, Kidney Transplant Program - Clinician Educator

Location: Philadelphia, PA Open Date: Oct 21, 2026 Close Date: Oct 21, 2028

The Division of Renal-Electrolyte and Hypertension in the Department of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the non-tenure clinician educator track. Expertise is required in the specific area of clinical, regulatory and administrative leadership of an adult kidney transplant program. Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree. Board certification in Nephrology is required. Candidates must meet OPTN/UNOS criteria to serve as a primary kidney transplant physician.

Teaching responsibilities may include instruction and supervision of nephrology and transplant nephrology fellows, internal medicine residents, and medical students in the inpatient transplant service, consult service, and outpatient transplant clinics.

Clinical responsibilities may include evaluation and management of kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant candidates and recipients, as well as living kidney donor candidates, in the outpatient setting, and attending on the inpatient kidney transplant service. The selected candidate will have experience working with advanced practice providers, transplant coordinators, and trainees.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include leading in clinical, translational, or health services research and scholarly activities related to kidney transplantation. Scholarship is required for faculty appointed to the Clinician Educator track and may include collaborative research, peer-reviewed publications, and other academic contributions that advance the field of kidney transplantation.

The Medical Director will oversee the clinical, operational, and regulatory responsibilities of the Kidney Transplant Program in partnership with the Surgical Director and Penn Transplant Institute leadership, with goals of patient safety, access to transplant, organ utilization, and program growth. Responsibilities include stewardship of waitlist management, selection committee processes, quality and performance improvement, and compliance with OPTN/UNOS, CMS, and SRTR requirements. The Medical Director will serve as an internal and external spokesperson for the program and participate in all transplant-related clinical and administrative meetings.

The Renal-Electrolyte and Hypertension Division is a highly collaborative academic and clinical environment with over 50 faculty and ACGME-accredited general nephrology and transplant nephrology fellowships. The Division provides exceptional clinical care across general nephrology, dialysis, and transplant nephrology, as well as specialty areas such as glomerular disease, rare and inherited kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease, onconephrology, neuroendocrine tumors, and hypertension. Penn performed the region's first kidney transplant in 1966, and the Penn Transplant Institute is the largest transplant center in the region.

As a member of the standing faculty on the Clinician Educator track, the successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate sustained academic scholarship and contributions to the field of kidney transplantation through scholarly publications, research, and other academic activities consistent with the expectations of the Clinician Educator track.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced transplant nephrologist with strong leadership skills who is committed to patient-centered care, equitable access to transplantation, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience.
