Job summary

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to meet credentialing and privileging standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide psychiatric oversight and clinical governance for Thompson’s NC programs.
  • Ensure clinical quality and compliance; determine appropriate treatment approaches.
  • Oversee high-risk cases and align with evidence-based psychiatric practices.
  • Complete administrative requirements for medical necessity documentation.
  • Collaborate with the NP for day-to-day psychiatric care; participate in meetings (virtual or onsite).
  • Support rotating after-hours coverage with the Psychiatric NP.

Position Overview

The Medical Director provides psychiatric oversight and clinical governance for Thompson’s North Carolina programs.

This role is administrative and supervisory in nature and is designed to complement a full‑time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) who is responsible for day‑to‑day psychiatric care.

The Medical Director ensures:

  • Clinical quality and compliance
  • Appropriate treatment approaches
  • Oversight of high‑risk cases
  • Alignment with evidence‑based psychiatric practices
  • Administrative requirements are complete for medical necessity documentation
Schedule
  • Part Time 5–8 hours per week
  • Flexible / hybrid structure depending on operational needs
  • Participation in key meetings (virtual or onsite as needed)
  • Rotating on call after hours coverage with Psychiatric NP
What does this position offer?
  • Starting Pay Range: $150.00-$250 hourly
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Medical Degree (MD or DO)
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified Psychiatrist in North Carolina
  • Active NC medical license
  • Enrolled and in good standing with NC Medicaid
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in psychiatric care (child/adolescent experience preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to meet credentialing and privileging standards
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Note: All residential staff must pass a Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training and demonstrate proper physical therapeutic techniques and holds.
