Medical Device Engineer III

Who We Are

The Center for Medical Innovation (CMI) is the University of Utah'smedical device incubator and venture studio. We help innovators,entrepreneurs, and startups take bold ideas and turn them intoreal, market-ready medical technologies. From hands-on programs toin-house prototyping and regulatory support, we're built to movefast and solve real problems in healthcare. We have opened the James LeVoy Sorenson Center for MedicalInnovation (SCMI) — a next-gen facility with state-of-the-artprototyping labs, an ISO-8 cleanroom, and advanced engineeringresources that supercharge our ability to develop breakthroughmedical devices.

The Role

We're looking for a highly skilled and proficient Medical DeviceEngineer to design, develop, prototype, and evaluate innovativemedical devices and equipment. This is a Level 3 role in which youwill conduct complex, important work under minimal supervision andwith wide latitude for independent judgment. You will utilizeadvanced knowledge of engineering and health sciences to turnclinical needs into functional prototypes and commercial-readysolutions within our venture studio environment.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

• Design, develop, and evaluate a wide range of medical devicesand equipment, including braces, prostheses, medication pumps,imaging equipment, implants, and other diagnostic and therapeutictechnologies.
• Utilize advanced knowledge of engineering and health sciencesto create detailed models, prototypes, and technical drawings usingCAD and other drafting tools/software.
• Conduct product testing, feasibility assessments, and failureanalysis studies to ensure devices perform as designed.
• Determine design specifications and perform adjustments,calibrations, and iterative improvements.
• Create and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
• Manage project schedules and budgets for assigned developmentprojects (as needed).
• Perform clinical and preclinical assessments of devices (asneeded).
• Support other departmental programs and initiatives asneeded.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher educationcan be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience(Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related workexperience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following joblevels:

Medical Device & Equipment Engineer, III: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (orequivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalency) in Engineering, MechanicalEngineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related scientific fieldplus 6 years of directly related work experience,or a Master's degree (or equivalency) plus4 years of directly related work experience. (1 year ofhigher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly relatedwork experience.)
• Demonstrated proficiency in medical device design, prototyping,and development.
• Strong proficiency with CAD software and prototypingtools.
• Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with the abilityto independently conduct feasibility studies and failureanalysis.
• Knowledge of medical device regulations, standards, and bestpractices.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with theability to work effectively with clinicians, innovators, andcross-functional teams.
• Passion for advancing healthcare innovation through rigorousengineering.
• Ability to conduct complex, important work under minimalsupervision with wide latitude for independent judgment.
