Job summary

Mercy Urgent Care is seeking a Medical Coder/Educator in Asheville, NC. This full-time role focuses on accurate coding for outpatient and professional services, auditing for trends, and turning findings into practical training for providers and staff.

You’ll collaborate with billing and revenue cycle teams to optimize reimbursement while maintaining compliance. The ideal candidate will have CPC/CCS/CPMA certification, 3–5 years of coding experience in urgent care, and proficiency with athenaOne

Qualifications

• 3–5 years medical coding experience in a clinical or urgent care setting.
• Expert knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II.
• Proficiency with athenaOne or comparable EHR/practice management system.
• Ability to interpret payer policies and LCD/NCD guidelines.
• CDEO certification, HIM degree, and experience training clinicians preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assign diagnosis and procedure codes for outpatient and professional services.
• Review provider documentation for completeness and payer compliance.
• Perform coding audits and resolve edits and denials promptly.
• Develop and deliver training on documentation and coding for providers, clinical staff, and coders.
• Support providers with E/M coding, HCC risk adjustment, and quality metrics documentation.
• Track and report accuracy rates, audit findings, and education activity.
• Assist with external audits and corrective action plans per HIPAA, CMS, and OIG guidelines.
