Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to interpret medical records, assign ICD-CM and CPT codes, and ensure accurate billing. The role involves abstracting data, resolving incomplete documentation, and collaborating with coding and billing teams to maintain compliance.

Qualified candidates have 3+ years in medical abstraction/coding, certification, and strong Excel/Word skills. This full-time role includes a day shift, Monday–Friday, with potential signing bonus

Qualifications

• High School education, plus medical coding certification.
• Three years of medical abstraction and coding experience.
• Knowledge of ICD-CM (current edition) and CPT, HCPCS coding systems.
• Requires intermediate level computer skills with Microsoft Office Excel and Word.
• Requires good interpersonal and communications skills.

Responsibilities

• Performs analysis on medical record documentation to include review of tests/reports, and determines appropriate codes, as defined by coding guidelines and other recognized reference materials.
• Abstracts and enters all codes and required demographic information into the hospital system or encounter forms.
• Assists in resolving incomplete and missing chart documentation to expedite chart abstraction and billing.
• Participates in improvement efforts and documentation training for medical and clinical staff.
• Participates in quality assurance and performance measurement reviews and reporting.
• Informs supervisor when backlog situations arise or necessary documents are not received timely.
• Alerts management to coding irregularities or trends.
• Maintains communications with other coding and billing personnel to maximize efficiency.
• Completes patient abstracts mandated by regulatory agencies and hospital planning.
