Job summary

Codman Square Health Center, Inc. is seeking a Medical Assistant to support routine patient care, prepare examination rooms, and assist providers with examinations and minor procedures.

The role requires a Medical Assistant program completion or equivalent, CPR certification, and 1–2 years of experience. You will work in a busy community health setting, prioritizing patient safety and accurate documentation.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and/or completion of a Medical Assistant program.
  • 1-2 years of experience preferred.
  • CPR certification required or to be obtained within the first 180 days.
  • Knowledge of medication reconciliation and prescription management tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and interview patients and collect visit data and vital signs.
  • Assist with examinations and minor procedures; perform finger sticks, EKGs, and tests.
  • Maintain confidential patient records and ensure data integrity.
  • Prepare exam rooms and set up instruments and sterilize equipment.
  • Support care team, participate in rounds and quality improvement.
  • Coordinate scheduling, training, and onboarding of new staff.
  • Administer vaccines as directed and monitor storage/handling.
  • Other duties across departments as needed.

Job description

Reporting to the Nurse Supervisor or designee, and under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Medical Assistant performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities. The MA promotes patients’ self-management and empowers patients/families to achieve maximum levels of wellness and independence. The MA will actively engage in care team huddles, clinical meetings, and quality improvement activities. The MA will seek opportunities to learn from others, be open to adapting best practices into their work and effectively communicate those areas which they feel uncomfortable or need to improve upon to their supervisors. The MA will contribute to the orientation and development of new personnel, as well as mentor peers and promote collaborative teamwork. The MA is committed to the constant pursuit of organizational excellence and improving the health status of the community. The MA must exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, always exercising utmost discretion, diplomacy, and tact in patient/staff interaction.

Primary Responsibilities
1. Routine Patient Care
  • Greet and interview patients.
  • Collect data, information, and vital signs pertinent to visit (examples include blood pressure, height, vision, and pulse oximetry)
  • Perform screenings pertinent to visits.
  • Assist with interpretation between providers, co-workers and patients as needed.
  • Assist during medical examinations and minor procedures.
  • Perform/assist with finger sticks, EKG’s, hearing, and vision, etc.
  • Secures patient information by completing and safeguarding medical records and keeping patient information confidential.
2. Preparation
  • Prepare exam room for correct procedure.
  • Prepare and clean treatment rooms and medical instruments (sterilization)
3. Clinical Support
  • Assist providers as necessary.
  • Perform Point of Care Testing according to protocol.
  • Assist during medical examinations and minor procedures.
  • Collect and prepare samples of blood and other specimens for laboratory tests.
4. Worksite
  • Maintain a safe patient care environment.
  • Follow all Joint Commission standards.
  • Follow all infection‑control policies and protocols.
5. Delegate within Scope of Practice
  • Perform orientation and training of new staff and externs per the request of a nurse.
6. Administrative
  • Complete forms for patients as requested.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment, notify Nursing Supervisor or designee ahead of needs.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi‑task and prioritize work.
  • Complete all mandatory training and competencies in a timely manner.
  • Follow the process for fax and mail as directed by the Supervisor or designee.
  • Check‑out patients assist with scheduling patients for follow‑up appointment.
7. Vaccine Administration
  • Monitoring Vaccine Storage/Handlings.
  • Continuing Education in Vaccines.
  • Knowledge in assigned Vaccines for Children/Adults (guidelines and requirements).
  • Give injections and medications as directed by provider order in collaboration with nurse.
  • Explain vaccine information to patient and any follow‑up care.
8. Other duties and/or other departments/locations as applies.
Requirements

High school diploma/GED and/or graduated from a Medical Assistant Program. And 1-2 years of experience preferred. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre‑established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Able to participate in the medication reconciliation processes and related prescription management tasks including prior authorizations. Must hold current CPR certification or obtain CPR certification within the first 180 days of employment.
