Job summary

Responsibilities

Under the direction of Neighborhood Health Center (NHC) Provider(s) and Practice Supervisor, the MA is the first point of care in the medical practice. This position assists the Provider(s) with patient procedures and may perform routine laboratory tests. This individual works hand-in-hand with the Provider(s) and Practice Supervisor(s) to

achieve quality outcomes for the patient.

Schedule
  • Tuesday-Wednesday 7:30a-6p, Thursday 7:30a-6:30p and Friday 7:30a-5p

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
  • Patient Care: Escorts patients to exam room, checks vital signs, measures weight and height, interviews patients to assess needs, records reason(s) for visit, and records current medications. Instructs patients on how to prepare for exam. Completes routine forms as appropriate (school, physical, immunization records, etc.) Ensures chart documentation is completed in a timely manner and in accordance with practice policy and procedures.
  • Assisting with Exams: Prepares exam rooms by cleaning rooms between patients and ensures room is stocked with the appropriate supplies. Assists provider during physical exams and procedures, by providing equipment, instruments, and support.
  • Medication Administration: Under the supervision of a provider, they may administer medications and injections. Maintains sample medication inventory and appropriate documentation.
  • Specimen Collection: perform venipuncture, collect urine, and obtain other samples for lab testing.
  • Setting up and performing procedures: Sets up and assists provider with patient procedures such as suture removal, wart and mole removal, pap smears, minor surgeries, etc. Also administers electrocardiograms (EKG), injections, immunizations, vision and hearing tests, venipuncture, and cerumen removal/ear irrigation per policy.
  • Sterilization: Sterilizes instruments and exam rooms to maintain a safe environment.
  • Wound Care: Changes dressings and assists with sutures under supervision of provider per policy.
  • Patient Education: Triages patient phone calls and relays education to patients on medications, treatments, and self-care verbatim from the Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant.
  • MAs (certified and non-certified) are to only perform tasks or duties listed as assigned, and that fall under their scope of practice, per NHC policy.
Laboratory Duties
  • Performs lab duties in accordance with needs of patients and as directed by the Provider/Practice Supervisor. Prepares specimens for in-house and reference labs as appropriate. Operates and calibrates laboratory equipment. Maintains laboratory documentation in accordance with CLIA standards and practice specific protocol.
  • Prepares specimens to be analyzed daily by an outside lab by packaging specimen appropriately, completing requisition form and contacting testing facility as necessary.
  • Tracks all labs sent off-site.
  • Disinfects lab area routinely and orders/maintains supplies as needed.
  • Submits necessary testing and documentation for lead screenings.
Administrative Duties
  • Scheduling: Schedules appointments, follow-up appointments, off-site diagnostic tests and referrals to other providers, and manages patient schedules.
  • Medical Records: Maintains patient records, updates information, and manages electronic health records (EHRs).
  • Billing and Insurance: Assists with billing, insurance claims, and patient inquiries. Performs prior authorizations and pre-certifications when appropriate.
  • Office/Clinic support: Manages supplies, maintains equipment, and ensures the office is organized and functional. Performs front office duties as needed.
  • Patient Communication: Greets patients, answers phone calls, and relays messages. Monitors patient portal, in-basket tasks, and emails daily.
  • Maintains documentation and quality program for Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Children’s Health and Illness Recovery Program (CHIRP).
  • Assists with medication assistance program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education

Required -Graduate of an approved school of medical assisting.

Qualifications Experience
  • Required -Must be a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant.
  • Preferred -One year experience in a medical practice.
Required Licensure/Certification

Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant / Basic Life Support (BLS)
