Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West in Michigan is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our ambulatory care team. The role blends administrative and clinical duties, from managing patient records and calls to measuring vitals, presenting patient care under a physician or advance practice providers.

You will be part of a care-team model, with opportunities to perform EKGs, CLIA-waived tests, immunizations, specimen collection, and clerical support while upholding infection prevention standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current Medical Assistant certification required.
• BLS certification required by 3/1/2025.
• Previous Medical Assistant experience preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with the medical team.
• Strong communication with patients and staff with diplomacy and tact.
• Ability to operate medical equipment safely.
• Knowledge of infection prevention and control standards.
• Flexible, organized and able to function under stressful situations.
• Ability to follow instructions and procedures.
• Culturally sensitive and able to work with diverse populations.
• Ability to prioritize and multitask.
• Intermediate experience with computers and information systems.

Responsibilities

• Ensures reports, test results, labs and correspondence are available before the patient’s appointment.
• Escorts patients to exam room, interviews patients, measures vital signs and documents in medical record.
• Reviews medical records to determine needed services and referrals.
• Assists physician or APP during examination or procedure.
• Provides patient with information and instructions as authorized by physician or APP.
• Keeps exam room stocked with supplies, maintains instruments and prepares for sterilization.
• Provides clerical support including forms, phones, and records requests.
• Cleans rooms between patient visits per infection prevention standards.
• Administers medications and immunizations under supervision.
• Processes messages from patients and front office to physicians.
• Processes messages and callbacks to patients, offices and pharmacies.
• Processes medication refills per protocols.
• Maintains logs and checks (refrigerator temperature, medications, oxygen, etc.).
• Performs EKGs and CLIA-waived tests.
• Collects blood samples and other specimens for diagnosis and treatment.
• Participates in process improvement activities.
