Job summary

Akron Children's Hospital is seeking a Medical Assistant to provide clinical and administrative support under the direction of a Provider or licensed nurse. The role includes patient preparation, vital signs, phlebotomy, data collection for care plans, and EPIC documentation.

The position requires a Medical Assistant program completion, BLS certification, and preferred MA certification. Onsite, full-time with a sign-on bonus of $2,000. Experience in healthcare and EPIC is valued.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • No experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for examination; records vital signs; phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by Providers.
  • Collects data for assessment and discharge planning under the direction of the Licensed Nurse.
  • Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy and procedure.
  • Documents patient findings in the EPIC system.
  • Schedules appointments, prepares visits, collects co-payments, and tracks patients as needed.
  • Performs clinical duties such as POCT, hearing/vision screenings, and other department-specific tasks.
  • Maintains exam rooms by cleaning, stocking, and preparing them.
  • Develops positive relationships with patients and families; follows safety policies.

Summary:

The Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support for patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

Responsibilities:
  1. Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure
  2. Collects data that contributes to the assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge plans, under the direction of the Licensed Nurse
  3. Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
  4. Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
  5. Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system
  6. Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling, visit preparation, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed
  7. Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures
  8. Performs routine task and general office duties such as faxing, copying, filing, etc. as needed
  9. Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms
  10. Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues
  11. Follows safety policies and procedures in the delivery of care to assure a safe environment for patients, families, and other staff members

Other information:
Technical Expertise
  1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
  2. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
  3. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
  4. Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  5. Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.
Education and Experience
  1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
  3. Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  4. Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  5. Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
  6. Years of experience supervising: None.
