Job summary

Akron Children’s Hospital is seeking a full-time Medical Assistant to provide clinical and administrative support under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse. The position is on-site in Akron with standard daytime hours, Monday–Friday, 8am–4:30pm or 7:30am–4pm.

Responsibilities include preparing patients for examinations, taking vital signs, phlebotomy as needed, documenting in EPIC, coordinating visits, and maintaining exam rooms.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program is required.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Experience with EPIC or similar EMR is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by Providers.
  • Collects data contributing to assessment and discharge plans under licensed Nurse direction.
  • Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy.
  • Communicates patient findings to Providers and Licensed Nurse.
  • Records care documentation in EPIC accurately and timely.
  • Performs appointment scheduling, visit prep, and patient tracking as needed.
  • Performs department-specific clinical duties (POCT, hearing/vision screenings).
  • Performs general office duties (faxing, copying, filing).
  • Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms.
  • Develops positive relationships with patients and families.
  • Follows safety policies to ensure a safe care environment.
  • Other duties assigned.

Summary:

The Medical Assistant role provides clinical and administrative support for patients under the direction of a Provider and/or licensed Nurse.

Responsibilities:
  1. Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure
  2. Collects data that contributes to the assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge plans, under the direction of the Licensed Nurse
  3. Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens in accordance with policy and procedure
  4. Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
  5. Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system
  6. Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling, visit preparation, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed
  7. Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures
  8. Performs routine task and general office duties such as faxing, copying, filing, etc. as needed
  9. Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms
  10. Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues
  11. Follows safety policies and procedures in the delivery of care to assure a safe environment for patients, families, and other staff members
  12. Other duties assigned
Other information:
Technical Expertise
  1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
  2. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
  3. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
  4. Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  5. Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.
Education and Experience
  1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
  3. Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  4. Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  5. Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
  6. Years of experience supervising: None.
