Summary
Under direct supervision of the provider, the Medical Assistant is responsible for patient assessment and care, and maintaining appropriate documentation. This position requires basic knowledge of specialty and/or primary care and the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients. The assistant coordinates care to assure high‑quality, compassionate patient service, maintains and oversees patients at office locations, and acts as liaison with other organizations and departments. Responsibilities include ordering medical, pharmacy, and office supplies, ensuring compliance with MyMichigan Health policies, OSHA guidelines, CLIA regulations, and other regulatory agencies, training new employees, students, and float staff, providing patient education, assisting with specialty care modalities, managing high‑risk patient care, educating on prescriptions and side effects, and ensuring continuity of care with other providers. General office duties such as data entry, filing, telephone handling, and computer use may also be required. Responsibilities
- (30%) Triages all calls, schedules urgent/emergent add‑ons, receives and relays test results, and supports, directs, and refers patients for consults, testing, and insurance pre‑certification and documentation.
- (30%) Greets patients and/or family, performs routine pre‑examination procedures including vital signs, assesses and records objective and subjective data, updates and maintains accurate patient records, performs medication reconciliation, enters allergy reactions, and processes refills as allowed by certification.
- (20%) Assists provider with examinations and procedures.
- (20%) Prepares and cleans the patient area, sets up equipment, and cleans and facilitates room set‑up after a procedure; disposes of contaminated supplies and sterilizes medical instruments.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides complete patient assessment as indicated within the scope of practice.
- Performs patient care measures including injections, minor dressing changes, and obtaining blood specimens.
- May be required to demonstrate competency in procedures such as ECG, PFT, ABI, and NST.
- Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment for patients and co‑workers.
- May need to travel to satellite clinics.
- Understands necessary computer functions in the office setting: MAPS, MCIR Practice Management, Electronic Medical Records, LIS, Emageon, dictation systems, and other programs to assist providers and staff.
- Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.
- Makes and maintains confidentiality and ensures patient rights in accordance with HIPAA.
- May perform clerical duties such as filing insurance forms, correspondence, arranging hospital admissions, answering telephone, and updating patient medical records.
- Orders supplies and medications.
- Maintains a system for accurately documenting and coding in the medical record as per policy.
- Participates in annual quality review as necessary.
- Provides age‑specific patient care according to department standards and policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows.

Certifications and Licensures
- BLS – Basic Life Support required within 3 months of hire or transfer.
- MA CERT – Medical Assistant required.
Required Certifications and Licenses
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- OR equivalent Medical Assistant credential (e.g., CCMA). Prefer completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Medical First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician Basic/Specialist, or Paramedic through the State of Michigan.
- Registered Radiologic Technologist through American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Required Education
High School Diploma or GED.
Experience, Training and Skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate successfully with individuals and groups, and with people at all levels.
- Mandatory OSHA training completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
- Knowledge of medical office policies, practices and procedures, normally acquired through 3–5 years in a health‑care setting.
- Previous experience in a physician clinic setting preferred.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
- Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including latex or substitutes.
- Free movement throughout the facility, with or without assistive devices.
- Vision and hearing (with or without assistance) necessary for job functions.
- Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for long periods; may require postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
- Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and other infectious materials; compliance with MyMichigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and maintain regular attendance.
- Dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, and fine movements.
- Physical demand level: light. Must occasionally lift or carry 11–20 lbs.; frequently lift 10 lbs.; and perform arm/leg controls such as walking or standing.
