Job description

Summary

Under direct supervision of the provider, you will be responsible for patient assessment and care, maintaining proper documentation, coordinating care to assure high quality patient care, acting as liaison with other organizations, ordering supplies as necessary, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations, training staff, providing patient education, assisting with specialty care modalities, monitoring compliance, handling emergencies, performing general office duties as needed. Expectations may vary slightly depending on practice; supervisor will clarify responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • (30%) Triages all calls, schedules daily urgent/emergent add-ons, receives and relays test results; supports, directs and refers patients for consults/test and insurance pre‑certification/documentation.
  • (30%) Greets patients/family, performs routine pre‑examination procedures, writes vital signs, records objective/subjective data; updates accurate patient record; performs medication reconciliation; processes refills.
  • (20%) Assists provider with examinations and procedures.
  • (20%) Prepares and cleans patient area, sets up equipment, disposes of contaminated supplies, sterilizes instruments.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides complete patient assessment as indicated within scope of practice.
  • Performs patient care measures including injections, minor dressing changes, and obtaining blood specimens.
  • Demonstrate competency to assist with procedures such as EKG, PFT, ABI, NST.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients and co‑workers.
  • May be required to travel to satellite clinics.
  • Understands necessary computer functions: MAPS, MCIR Practice Management, EMR, LIS, Emageon, dictation systems, etc.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking for patient management.
  • Maintains confidentiality and ensures patient rights per HIPAA.
  • May perform clerical duties such as filing insurance forms, correspondence, arranging hospital admission, answering the phone, updating/filling medical records.
  • Orders supplies and medications.
  • Accurately documents and codes in the medical record per policy.
  • Participates in annual review for quality and completeness as necessary.
  • Provides for age‑specific needs of population served according to departmental standards and policies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • May participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.
Certifications and Licensures
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologist (AMT)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • Equivalent Medical Assistant Credential such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) or similar.
  • Medical First Responder; Emergency Medical Tech Basic/Specialist; Paramedic through Michigan; or Registered Radiologic Technologist through American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Required

As required by Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to be employed through MyMichigan Health, all Medical Assistants must possess one of the following active certification/licensure:

Experience, Training and Skills

Excellent interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually. Knowledge of medical office policies and procedures normally acquired through 3–5 years of work in the health care system.

Preferred Experience

Previous experience in a physician clinic setting.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, death.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex or substitutes.
  • May be required to move freely, use assisted devices, perform tasks outlined.
  • Vision and hearing necessary, may use assisted devices.
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods, perform stooping, kneeling, crouching, repetitive movements.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Must follow bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance.
  • Dexterity for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering.
  • Physical Demand Level: Light. Occasionally lift 11–20 lbs (0–33% of workday), frequently 10 lbs (34–66%), frequent walking/standing/pushing/pulling of arm/leg controls.
