Job Description

Summary:

Summit Health’s Medical Assistants are responsible for patient care and department flow. They gather medical histories, prepare patients for exams, assist with procedures, prepare and administer medications, deliver patient instructions, and anticipate the needs of the provider while addressing patient needs.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Prepare examination rooms, escort patients, and clean rooms after exams.
2. Ensure proper preparation for patient visits, including gathering pertinent information.
3. Maintain efficient patient flow.
4. Communicate and provide care respecting age, cultural, spiritual, and developmental needs.
5. Answer calls appropriately, direct calls, and take accurate messages.
6. Schedule appointments according to departmental guidelines.
7. Stock examination rooms with necessary supplies.
8. Reconcile encounters daily as per policy.
9. Communicate issues to supervisors promptly.
10. Obtain and document vital signs accurately in the EHR.
11. Review and update medication lists, document allergies, and understand prescription procedures.
12. Facilitate transition of care and provide referrals or consults as needed.
13. Use EHR tasking appropriately and timely.

Education, Certification, and Training:

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Completion of an accredited CMA, RMA, or EMT program is highly encouraged.
• Experience as Medical Assistant, CMA, RMA, EMT preferred; in-house training available if no prior experience.
• Pediatrics Only: Medical Assistant Certification and/or EMT license required.
• Maintain certification/license and BLS certification.
• Excellent customer service, teamwork, communication skills, and computer proficiency required.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and patient care equipment preferred.
