The Medical Assistant Externship Coordinator plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between academic training and real-world healthcare practice. This position is instrumental in ensuring that aspiring Medical Assistants gain hands‑on experience through high‑quality externship opportunities. By fostering strong partnerships within the medical community, this role directly contributes to the professional growth and success of students, as well as the overall reputation of the program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leverage expertise in medical assisting to connect students with externship sites that align with industry standards and expectations
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements, maintaining the integrity of the program
  • Monitor student progress and provide guidance to ensure successful completion of externship requirements
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support students' transition from externship to full-time employment
  • Build and maintain a robust network of externship sites for Medical Assistant students
  • Achieve and sustain a minimum 40% extern‑to‑hire conversion rate across assigned sites
  • Conduct regular site visits to evaluate student performance and strengthen relationships with externship partners
  • Ensure program compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards, including adherence to TWC regulations
  • Collaborate with Career Services and Placement teams to facilitate students' transition into full‑time employment opportunities
  • Provide counseling to students on attendance, professionalism, and performance expectations during their externship experience
  • Conduct externship orientations and assist students with resume writing and interview preparation
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation, including timecards, evaluations, and affiliation agreements
  • Track student progress, ensuring completion of final evaluations and exit interviews
  • Promote the externship program within the medical community through outreach and networking initiatives
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 3+ years of practical experience in the medical assisting field
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential is required
  • CPR certification is preferred
  • No prior teaching experience is necessary; however, a strong passion for supporting student success is essential
