Job Summary:

The Medical Assistant functions under the direction of the Physician, Clinical Lead, Clinical Nurse Supervisor, Nurse Supervisor, and/or Office Manager. They recognize patients' needs and symptoms in advance and provide care under the physician's guidance. Responsibilities include preparing patients for exams, assisting during treatments, coordinating tests and follow-up care, and recording treatments in the medical record. They also assist with explaining patient instructions to patients and families. The role requires competency and skills to serve patients of all ages, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Additional duties may involve front office registration, laboratory testing, and radiology functions within a specialty setting.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Clinical and Non-Clinical Duties:

  1. Register patients upon entrance, perform registration operations
  2. Prepare equipment and rooms, assist physicians with treatments
  3. Perform vital signs and other patient preparation duties
  4. Rotate among clinical and non-clinical areas such as lab, x-ray, and front office
  5. Ensure patient safety
  6. Cross-train team members

Diagnostic Imaging Duties:

  1. Perform radiographic and diagnostic imaging procedures
  2. Prepare and position patients, ensure proper techniques including radiation protection
  3. Obtain optimal views as ordered, process images, review for quality
  4. Maintain logs and documentation
  5. Cross-train team members

Laboratory Duties:

  1. Start lab equipment, maintain logs and documentation
  2. Perform laboratory tests and point-of-care testing
  3. Draw blood samples, order and stock supplies
  4. Perform quality control and cleaning procedures
  5. Cross-train team members

Patient Liaison:

  1. Provide patient-centered care considering cultural diversity
  2. Partner with patients and families, explain physician instructions
  3. Practice current clinical standards

Team Work and Collaboration:

  1. Coordinate delivery and documentation of patient care
  2. Practice respectful, inclusive communication
  3. Practice fiscally responsible teamwork

Professional Development and Initiative:

  1. Complete professional competency assessments and mandatory education
  2. Serve as a preceptor and role model

Evidence-Based Practice and Research:

  1. Promote evidence-based practice and participate in value analysis
  2. Uphold organizational policies and standards, serve as practice Safety Coach
  3. Participate in data collection and clinical research

Resources and Support:

  1. Plan for patient care across the continuum
  2. Develop protocols and procedures in collaboration with the team
  3. Support resource efficiency

Minimum Education:

High school diploma/equivalent required or graduate from an accredited medical assistant program (preferred) or a newly formed program seeking accreditation (preferred)

Licenses and Certifications:

All certifications required upon hire unless otherwise specified:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Instructor
  • Certified Medical Assistant

Experience:

Previous practice setting experience preferred; specific practice or radiology experience preferred; phlebotomy certification preferred. Training will be provided if necessary within the first sixty days.
