Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

• Provide direct and indirect patient care within the Medical Assisting scope of practice
• Obtain and document chief complaints, vital signs, health maintenance checks, medication reviews, and patient/family needs
• Administer ordered medications, including oral, injectable, and topical medications
• Identify significant changes in patient condition and report them to the provider
• Troubleshoot issues and elevate problems to the provider, supervisor, or appropriate internal resource
• Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for physicians
• Travel to other facilities or adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed
• Maintain clean, orderly, safe, and properly equipped work areas and examination rooms
• Assist patients and providers with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, patient contact, troubleshooting, and clinical information gathering
• Accurately document in electronic medical records and manage provider-directed EHR inbox messages
• Perform front desk workflows, including MyChart requests, registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out
• Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits; collect co-pays as needed
• Order supplies, track referrals, labs, and diagnostic tests, and dispose of contaminated supplies
• Record medical histories, vital statistics, test results, and other patient information
• Collect and prepare blood, tissue, and other laboratory specimens
• Provide authorized prescription and refill information to pharmacies as directed
• Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions
• Clean and sterilize instruments and perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses
• Perform general office duties and complete competency checklists

Requirements

• Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the listed recognized certifying organizations (required)
• BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire and required prior to independent patient care at BSMH)
• High School/GED (required)
• In South Carolina, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program, an approved South Carolina health sciences program, a U.S. military medical assisting program, a U.S. Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeship program, or an aligned healthcare-employer training program is required
• Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred)
• 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred)
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, and teams in a high-volume environment
