Description

South Bend Orthopaedics is searching for a full-time certified or registered Medical Assistant. The position would be responsible for assisting physicians with patient care including clerical, environmental and organizational tasks. Clinical medical assisting duties in the area of general orthopedics; spine, hand, podiatry and rehabilitation specialties.

Job Summary

Medical assistants contribute to the positive image of SBO. A Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians in the area of general orthopedics; spine, hand, podiatry, pain management, and rehabilitation specialties. Provides outstanding and professional customer service, is courteous during their interaction with patients and teammates.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures efficiency by assisting the physicians in staying on track with their daily schedules.
  • Assists patients as needed with their walking, dressing, collecting specimens, and or preparing them for exams or surgeries.
  • Collects patient history; performs screenings, assists physicians & physician assistants with various procedures, and follows internal protocols.
  • Prepares patients’ charts and provides instructions to patients & families.
  • Sends and receives patient medical records; obtains lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, and additional patients’ information.
  • Completes forms and requisitions as needed.
  • Assists in managing charts to ensure information is correctly entered into EMR software.
  • Sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Cleans and sterilizes exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits.
  • Follows HIPAA guidelines with the maintenance of medical records.
  • Orders, sorts, stores medical supplies; restocks the exam/procedure rooms.
  • Respects and promotes patient rights, responds appropriately to emergency codes.
  • Displays a collaborative and team player attitude.
  • Participates in care team meetings to discuss patient care and improvement in the clinic operations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Mental Demands

  • The emotional maturity and stability to approach highly stressful human situations in a calm and rational manner. The ability to adhere to ethical standards of conduct as well as applicable state and federal laws. The ability to provide effective written, oral, nonverbal communication with patients and their families, colleagues, health care providers, and the public.
  • Able to work in a combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings.
  • Must be able to stand and sit, walk at a moderate pace, and view computer screens for long periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. and carry or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasionally be able to crouch, stoop, kneel, to assist patients.
  • Must be able to use arms to reach and use hands for manual tasks.
  • Working Conditions
  • Able to work in an exposed environment to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinic setting.
  • Standing, sitting for up to 8 or more hours/day while doing computer input and responding to phone questions.
  • Work requiring moderate speed and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Manual dexterity using a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work.

Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.
  • Able to communicate clearly and possess interpersonal skills in order to establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, and team members.
  • Knowledge of medical specialty and specific assisting tasks related.
  • Accuracy and efficiency in task completion utilizing planning and organization; navigate and
  • comprehension of computer software systems in an office setting.
  • Must maintain knowledge of clinic policies and procedures and medical terminology as related to the job.

Standard Qualifications

Education: Associates Degree or Technical Certificate from an accredited college for Medical Assistants; certification preferred.

Experience: Minimum of one-year work experience in public contact job, preferably service-related. Experience or interest in health care.
